The "Cathedral" replaced the original 1913 ground on the same site; its steep stands and Basque-only signing policy make it Spain's most intimidating away day.

San Mamés has been the home of Athletic Club since 2013, and holds 53,289 spectators for football. The playing surface is hybrid grass, and the record attendance of 49,120 was set in a fixture that still gets talked about in Bilbao.

For a matchday, the ground sits in Bilbao and is served by local rail and bus routes; arriving 45 minutes before kick-off is the difference between a queue and a seat. Away supporters are usually housed in one corner block, and the atmosphere is loudest behind the goal at the home end.
