Arsenal’s set-piece machine is the most copied innovation of the season
Six clubs have hired set-piece coaches since August. The arms race has a new front.

Set pieces were football’s forgotten third. Then Arsenal made them a weapon, and now six Premier League clubs have hired specialist coaches since August.
The numbers justify the spending: Arsenal have scored more goals from dead-ball situations than five entire Premier League teams have scored in total, and their expected-goals delta from set plays is the largest any analytics department has modelled.
The innovation is less about delivery than about blocking patterns: layered screens that free one runner, executed with timing that survives referee scrutiny because the contact happens before the ball moves.
Defensive copycats are struggling because the scheme requires specific personnel: two tall in-swinging deliverers and at least three aerial threats. Coaching helps; recruitment still decides.
