World Cup 2026 format: 48 teams, 12 groups and a new round of 32
The largest World Cup ever played adds 16 teams, 40 matches and one extra knockout round.
The structure
Forty-eight teams are drawn into 12 groups of four. Each plays three group matches. The top two from every group advance, plus the eight best third-placed teams, producing a round of 32 for the first time in the tournament's history.
From there it is a straight knockout: round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place match and final. The champion will play eight matches, one more than in 2022.
The calendar
The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026 across 16 venues in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The group stage takes 17 days, the knockout rounds 21, with rest days built in for travel between three countries.
Heat is the organising problem. Several venues have retractable roofs, and kick-off times are staggered so that the hottest cities play in the evening local time.
How the best third-placed teams are ranked
The eight best third-placed teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary points, then drawing of lots. The ranking also determines which group winner they meet in the round of 32.
This is the rule that will decide at least one team's tournament. In a 48-team field, four points will almost certainly be enough and three will leave a team sweating on results elsewhere.
