The transfer window explained: registration periods, loans and deadline day

A transfer is not a purchase. It is a registration, and the window is the only time it can be filed.

Two windows, one long and one short

Most European leagues run a summer window from June to early September and a winter window through January. The dates differ by country, which is why a player can move to Turkey or Saudi Arabia after the English deadline has closed.

Free agents are the exception: a player without a club can be registered outside the window, which is why some squads add an experienced name in October.

What a club actually buys

Clubs buy the registration, not the person. The fee is paid to the selling club, the player signs a contract with the buying club, and the league registers the move. Sell-on clauses, instalments and appearance bonuses are all part of that contract rather than the transfer itself.

That distinction explains the deals that collapse at 11pm: the fee is agreed, but the registration documents are not filed before the window shuts.

Loans are not free transfers

A loan is a temporary registration. The parent club keeps the player's contract, the borrowing club pays a fee or a share of wages, and FIFA rules cap the number of international loans a club can complete each season.

Obligation-to-buy clauses turn a loan into a deferred transfer. They are usually triggered by appearances, promotion or qualification for Europe, which is why a bench player can suddenly become very expensive in May.

Quick answers

Can a player move twice in one window?

Yes, but not to a third club in the same competition, and never while registered to two clubs at once.

What is deadline day?

The final day of the window, when clubs file paperwork until midnight. Deals are often agreed hours earlier and announced late.

Do free transfers count in the window?

A free agent can sign at any time. A player under contract can only move inside the window, even for no fee.
